How the Club Works

The club is democratic, which means that the only thing I get to dictate are the themes for each month. After that it’s out of my hands, because we all nominate the books we’d most like to read, and then we vote to determine a single winner for each months’ discussion.

Each month follows the same pattern:

  • Nominations: Around the first or second week of each month, I’ll introduce the theme for the next month’s discussion.  Then everyone chimes in with a book they’d like to nominate for the club’s consideration.
  • Voting: The following week I’ll compile a list of all the nominees and the club votes on a winner.  In the case of a tie, I use my moderator privileges to decide on the winner.  It happens more often than you’d think, and I agonize over my decision each time.
  • Discussion: About the third or fourth week in the month, we’ll kick off our discussion for that month’s winner.  The discussion begins on a Monday, but anyone is welcome to join in at any time.

If you have any questions, feel free to add a comment below.  If you’d like to join, just start participating in the nominations, votes, and discussions.  New members are always welcome.

Comments
  1. Is that right for July? Historical romance & women of color themes?

  2. Never mind, I get it now, those are the nomination dates for next months theme.

    • Hi Abigail – Yeah, it’s a little confusing, because we’re always doing nominations and votes for the next month’s theme. So even though we discuss our historical pick in July, we’re preparing for it now. I open the vote thread on Monday, and Into the Wilderness is on it. Somebody nominated after you brought it up, so thanks again for mentioning it.

  3. Angela M Drane says:

This sounds like an awesome book club. Keep up with the great reviews.

  4. Kainani says:

Wow, I am thrilled to participate in your book club. I’ve actually been searching for a book club and your club seems really appealing. I like the idea of letting the club members nominate and vote for the book to discuss. I’m going to give this a try. I’m a little too late to participate with tomorrow discussion but I’m planning to read Happy Hour at Casa Dracula. See you then.

    • Hi Kainani, I hope you will join us. The ladies who participate each month are the nicest, funniest book lovers you will find online. Also, our group is small enough to let you get to know the other members, and they’re a great source for killer book recommendations.

Feel free to join us when we nominate books in about two weeks for the Mystery/Thrillers theme.

  5. DR Atmo Woob says:

In October your club is doing a graphic novel. An interesting choice is a biography of Franz Kalfka done as a graphic book with drawings by the famous underground ( in the 1960′s) artist R. Crumb.
